If you haven’t already noticed, I’m kind of obsessed with the denim on denim look! I have always loved this trend but I wasn’t always confident on how to wear denim on denim…until now!
People tend to shy away from the all denim look (thanks to Britney and Justin circa 2001), but the denim on denim look is back in style and isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
If you have avoided this trend because you fear you will look outdated or unstylish (or like Britney and JT), I am going to teach you the tips I have found that will make you feel confident and fashionable while wearing denim on denim! After you read my tips below, you will have no reason to shy away from this super stylish and trendy look!
If you want to learn how to master the denim on denim outfit, read my 6 tips below on how to perfectly achieve this look!
Tip 1 // Wear Different Shades of Blue
When picking out a denim on denim outfit, it is very important to wear different shades of blue on the top and bottom. I personally like the look of a light denim shirt paired with dark jeans. Most of the time it is more flattering to wear a darker color on the bottom. You can also wear a dark denim shirt with light washed jeans, but it’s totally up to you and your personal preference! It’s important for there to be a contrast in the colors from your top and pants. If you have never tried this double denim trend out before and you are apprehensive about it, start out by wearing a denim shirt with white, black or gray jeans. Once you feel like you are comfortable in the denim shirt and are ready to try the denim on denim look, swap out with white/black/gray jeans with your blue jeans. It’s always easier to ease your way into a trend rather than jumping right into it.
Tip 2 // Add a Pop of Color
When you are wearing an all blue outfit, it’s important to add a pop of color or two to your outfit. I added a red cross body bag to my outfit to break up the all denim look. Another option is adding a statement necklace, a bold red or hot pink lip, a leather jacket, shoes or a belt. Choose pops of colors that are bright and that stand out against the blue. I wouldn’t wear any blue or turquoise accessories with this look because they will not stand out like you want them to against the blue. I’m sure you already assumed this, but stay away from any denim accessories!
Tip 3 // Dress Up Your Look
I personally love a denim on denim look that is a bit more dressed up. I paired my flared denim with some chunky heels. You could also wear a denim top with skinny jeans and some barely there heels! Add your pop of color to your look with a pair of heels like these. When you dress up your double denim look, it instantly makes it look more high end. Along with dressing up this look with heels, don’t forget to add accessories to your outfit. Wearing a watch, bracelets, rings, and earrings will be sure to elevate your entire look.
Tip 4 // Incorporate Other Trends
Don’t be afraid to add some other trends to your denim on denim outfit! I wore a denim off the shoulder top in my outfit because OTS tops are my favorite trend at the moment! I also wore my flared jeans because they’re trendy and perfect to pair with a fun outfit. If I wasn’t wearing my flared jeans, I would’ve worn distressed denim. Distressed denim is very on trend and would be a great addition to an all denim outfit! Another option is adding some over the knee boots to this outfit. Not only will OTK boots look amazing over skinny jeans, but they will also help break up the all blue look.
Tip 5 // Fit is Key
When you are shopping for a denim shirt and pants, the fit of those items is extremely important! If your shirt is oversized, you need to pair it with very fitted jeans. If you are wearing a fitted denim top, feel free to pair it with boyfriend jeans. You want to avoid wearing a baggy shirt with baggy jeans because that will end up looking frumpy instead of fashionable. When it comes to fashion, the fit is always extremely important, but in the denim on denim world, it is one of the most important factors!
Tip 6 // Be Confident
The most important tip of all is to be confident in your outfit! When you are trying out any new trend, it is vital that you exude confidence. When you are wearing an outfit that you don’t feel comfortable or confident in, you can always tell how uncomfortable you feel by the look on your face. Confidence is your best accessory, so make sure you wear it well! Before stepping out to a huge event in your double denim outfit, try wearing it out on a coffee date with friends first. Like I mentioned in tip #1, it’s important to ease your way into trends rather than jumping in head first. When you are confident, you can wear anything you want and become a trend setter. It’s really not about the outfit, but it’s about the confidence you express!
I hope these 6 tips have helped you gain the confidence you needed to wear an all denim outfit! Take a look through your closet and see if you have what you need to create the perfect all denim look from head to toe. If you have any questions about this trend, please feel free to ask!
