Although it’s 2018, many of the fashion trends we know and love are inspired by previous decades. Ever heard of the phrase ‘fashion repeats itself’? Well, it 100% does! I never ever thought some of the cringe-worthy things I wore in the 90s and early 2000s would ever see the light of day again, yet platform sneakers, clear backpacks, and overalls are back in style and people are legitimately wearing them.

Since I was born and grew up in the 90s, it’s so odd to see certain trends coming back, and I am sure that is how people feel who grew up in the 70s and are seeing so many 70s trends resurfacing. I of course did not live through the 70s but I am OBSESSED with many 70s inspired trends. From bell bottoms to bell sleeves to floral prints and boho silhouettes, I am all about these trends making a comeback.

Top 70s Fashion Ideas for 2018

Below I am listing 11 of my favorite 70s inspired trends that are back and better than ever.

1. Bell bottoms

I have always been a HUGE fan of bell bottoms/flare jeans, but they have been hard to come across for the past couple years, but they are finally starting to make a comeback again! I think they are so flattering and make you look tall and leggy, especially if they are high waisted.

2. Bell sleeve tops

We’ve been seeing bell sleeve tops and sweaters for the past few years, and they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. They add such a fun and unique detail to any basic sweater or top. I personally don’t pair bell sleeve tops with bell bottom jeans because that’s just a lot of flare going on. I prefer wearing them with skinny jeans or a denim skirt.

3. Denim mini skirts

Denim mini skirts made a huge comeback last summer, and they are still all the rage today. We have also been seeing lots of different styles of denim skirts: light denim, dark denim, black skirts, ones with buttons up the front, distressing…you name it, it probably exists. A denim skirt is an absolute spring and summer wardrobe must have.

4. Graphic tees

Graphic tees seem to always be in style, but 70s inspired tees have been trending like crazy lately, especially 70s band tees. I purchased an AC/DC graphic tee from Shopbop that I have worn nonstop, and I bought it because I love the style and look of the shirt. I probably wouldn’t be able to name more than 1 AC/DC song, but just because I’m not a huge fan of the band doesn’t mean I can’t rock a cool tee 🙂

5. Retro print tops

Stripes, chevron, floral prints…we have the 70s to thank for these amazing prints. You may not associate these prints with the 70s era, but they are most definitely 70s inspired.

6. Boho silhouettes

When I think of a bohemian looking silhouette, I think of oversized tops and dresses, embroidered details and lightweight fabrics. We have been seeing a ton of the boho look this summer because it’s easy to throw on and it looks so light and summery.

7. Knee high boots

Knee high and over the knee boots were definitely a thing of the 70s but they have made a huge comeback in the past several years. You can literally find suede and leather knee high and OTK boots everywhere in the fall and winter. They are an absolute must have for every woman!

8. Denim on denim

Denim on denim can be a huge hit or miss depending on how it’s styled, but it is most definitely inspired from the 70s. I love wearing a lighter colored chambray top paired with a darker pair of denim. It helps if you add a pop of color to your look with a belt, purse, or other accessory! See how I style the denim on denim trend here.

9. Faux fur coats

Faux fur coats have been my OBSESSION last year and this year. I picked up a couple of them at the Nordstrom Sale, and I have a few favorites from last year as well. I love that there are so many fun options when it comes to faux fur coats. There are so many different faux fur textures, colors, patterns, etc! A fur coat will make any outfit look instantly more stylish and unique.

10. Round oversized sunnies

Large, oversized sunnies have been popular for many years, but oversized round sunnies have become increasingly more popular as of late. Designers have been coming out with their own version of oversized 70s inspired round glasses, but luckily there are many cheaper options out there too! You don’t have to break the bank to follow this trend, unless you want to of course 🙂

11. Hair & neck scarves

This has been one of my FAVORITE 70s inspired trends this year. Hair and neck scarves have been all the craze lately. I have purchased several silk scarves of different colors and patterns and enjoy wearing them in my hair. Many people also like to tie their silk scarves or bandanas around their neck to add something fun to a basic outfit. Another way to use a silk scarf is to tie it onto the strap of your handbag to add a fun pop of color.
