WOW! I can’t believe Joyfully Styled is one year old! One year ago I decided to take a leap of faith and start this crazy blogging journey. Let me tell you that I am SO glad I decided to do it. I have learned so much about myself, about the blogging world, and much more about the fashion and beauty industries. I wanted to share with you the 10 lessons I learned in my first year of blogging. I hope these lessons will help you if you are interested in starting your own fashion blog.
10 Lessons I Learned in My First Year of Blogging:
1. It’s Harder Than You Think
This was a lesson that I learned right away! It takes a LOT to set up your blog, figure out how the heck to work WordPress, think of content ideas to post about, etc. Blogging truly does take hard work and dedication, but if you are passionate about it then it will be worth it!
2. Grow Thick Skin
This was another lesson I learned right away and it wasn’t a fun one. There will always be “haters” or people in your life that don’t want to see you succeed. I realized that it truly does not matter what other people think/say! If you are doing something that makes you happy then do it!! Grow a thick skin and be yourself.
3. Make Time
Blogging takes a lot of time! From thinking of content ideas, to taking blog pictures, selecting the photos you want, writing your post, finding links to the clothing, posting it, responding to comments…there is a LOT that goes into it. You need to make time every day to work on your blog. If you don’t make time for it, it’s not going to happen.
4. Plan Ahead
It’s extremely important to plan ahead when it comes to photoshoots and blog post ideas. I always come up with my ideas weeks before I execute them. I keep a running list of ideas that I have, and then I will pick a day when I’m going to write/create the post or take the photos for it.
5. Be Willing to Invest
I did not realize how much money I was going to spend on my blog in the first year. I was pretty indecisive when it came to choosing a blog layout. Now that I am on my 3rd design, I am finally happy with it 🙂 But I did have to pay for it…3 times (insert embarrassed emoji). There are many costs that are associated with maintaining a blog. Themes, logos, renewing your blog…those all cost money! I see all of these costs as a long term investment so I am okay with it.
6. Be Consistent
I have definitely been guilty of publishing a blog post and then going MIA for a few weeks. If I don’t hold myself to a schedule, I will not be successful. It’s important to be consistent with your posting routine. It’s also important to be consistent with responding to emails and blog comments!
7. Ask For Help
Do not, and I repeat do not be afraid to ask for help! I did not have a photographer so I asked my sister to take my blog pictures for me and it has worked out wonderfully! My fiancé is the founder of a St. Louis SEO agency so I have asked for his help on multiple occasions! Don’t be afraid to reach out to other bloggers in your industry. They have been in your exact same position and I am sure they would be more than willing to answer a few questions.
I was so lucky to have found a fashion blogging network in St. Louis where I got to participate in many St. Louis Fashion Week events and met dozens of local fashion bloggers. Do a Google search and find out if your city has any networking programs that you can apply for/join to become more involved in the industry.
9. Have Fun
This is such an important lesson that I learned!! At times I got very stressed out trying to meet certain deadlines I made for myself. Stress always takes the fun out of things. I started Joyfully Styled as a FUN project where I could express myself and help others, and I decided that I was not going to let anything take the fun out of that. Don’t ever forget why you started your blog…
10. Don’t Give Up
There were several times over the past year when I felt like I was too busy or too overwhelmed to keep my blog going. I’m so glad I pushed through those hard times because my blog is something that I want to last for a very long time, and most of all, I LOVE doing it!
I want to thank everyone who has supported me and my blog over the past year! Thank you to my readers for being interested in what I post, and thank you for motivating me to continue on this blogging journey.
Here’s to another year of Joyfully Styled!
